A Ride into the Sunset

2.5 months ago, a group of 7 friends were riding in a minivan as the sun was setting in Death Valley.

'Look the sun is setting on the left', the driver said. I was the front seat passenger. Sheryl Crow's 'Always on your side' was playing. Everyone else was silent. I looked left at the beautiful sunset and then around at the amazing colours it was playing on the bare rocks and sandy landscape. That was one of my most peaceful encounters in my life.

As Sheryl Crow sang

'Well they say that love is in the air, never is it clear
How to pull it close and make it stay
Butterflies are free to fly, why do they fly away,
Leavin' me to carry on and wonder why
Was it you that kept me wandering through this life
When you know that I was always on your side?'

a certain someone came to mind and all melancholic hell broke loose.

Now I'm sitting on a couch at 1.30am typing this blog post in the comfort of the living room. There's no sunset but with 'Always on my side' playing again, that scene in Death Valley is repeating itself again and again in my mind. So is the thought of that someone.

I guess melancholy will always accompany sunsets.
You too will always accompany how I remembered the day I rode into the sunset at Death Valley.

Mistakes

Lesson of the day:
When in doubt, ask, check and double check. Do not try to go through with your blind sighted decision and hope that you did not make a mistake.

I can't believe I'm still trying to learn that at 22.

Will I ever make a good engineer?

Disappointed.

It's Never Easy to Say Goodbye

So our journey here at Silicon Valley is REALLY drawing to an end. It's actually surprisingly near and I'm appalled that I'm still so chill about it. Well until now that is. Maybe it's all Mohan's fault because he kept lamenting about the prospect of going home so much so that I'm now affected by it. But I guess I'm still a sentimental person despite my oft cold exterior. There are so many things here which I'm not willing to let go of. The memories, the people, the place, the opportunities and the home away from home.

There is something else bugging me besides the above. Above all, I guess, I'm afraid that I'll be the only one hanging on to the memories we created here. I'm afraid that after we go back to Singapore, the solid friendship that we formed here will simply vanish. If nobody else but me continues to keep those memories close to their hearts, it will be as though they never happened before.

This sounds vaguely familiar eh my friends? A similar situation happened barely 3 years ago. I wouldn't say I have completely gotten over that. I still hope that when I get back to Singapore, those bridges that were broken can be rebuilt, fortified and made to last as long as anybody can possibly remember. And I will not slack on fortifying the bridges that are now strong.

I just hope that those whom I call my good friends can join me in fortifying those bridges.

So as with any graduation, there are graduation songs. Here's one and it never fails to reflect how I really (really!) feel

A verse ringing in my ear

Here's a set of lyrics that keeps ringing in my ear. It's ringing so much that I have to blog it down:

What I am to you is not real
What I am to you you do not need
What I am to you is not what you mean to me
You give me miles and miles of mountains
And I'll ask for the sea

Photograph

I want to begin this post with the following 2 verses from Nickelback's Photograph and end with a real photograph

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

Every memory of walking out the front
door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye

NOT!

The journey is almost over but it's not time to say goodbye yet! At this point though, I want to say a big word of thanks to the greatest team I've ever worked with. This journey has been fantastic but without the time we spent going through thick and thin for the last 3 months, it would have been so much less meaningful. Thanks for the great work, the support and encouragement, the entertainment and last but not least, the ever-lasting friendship. 2+1=7 forever!
